São Marcos da Serra celebrates the event’s 26th edition

    – March 21, 2024

XXVI Feira Do Folar - São Marcos Da Serra

In celebration of the coming Easter, São Marcos da Serra, in Silves Municipality, is hosting the Feira do Folar, a traditional celebration of the famous ‘folar’ cakes in all their shapes and flavours, scented with cinnamon and anise, decorated with whole eggs and made from dough leavened with baker’s yeast – a staple for this season..

The celebration brings together various traditional producers of the ‘folar’, as well as other local producers of typical products of the region, which range from sweets, licours, the Algarve’s ‘medronho’ (firewater) and other specialities.

Silves’ São Marcos da Serra, situated in the northern area of the Algarve region, is a parish known for its mountainous characteristics, the production of bread and the typical ‘folar’ – the most traditional Easter cake in Portugal.

Feira do Folar’s programme will include concerts, religious celebrations, choral groups, folk groups, dance performances and street entertainment for the whole family, promoting the Algarve’s inland areas, particularly its popular culture, gastronomy, and handicrafts, as well as the knowledge of local people.

This year’s edition of Rallye Casinos do Algarve marks a significant milestone as the rally will be held in five Algarve municipalities, a feat not seen since 1996.

Marking the second race of the 2024 Portugal Rally Championship, the headquarters will be once again at the Hotel Algarve Casino in Praia da Rocha, Portimão.

A free practice and qualifying session will take place in Lagoa on March 15 to determine the starting order.

As the rally moves into the western Algarve, two new special stages will be held in Lagos and Barão de S. João in the afternoon. Following that, it will travel to Vila do Bispo, and end with a “super stage” in Lagos at night.

On Saturday, March 16, the rally shifts to Silves, featuring three qualifying stages. An intermediate stop is made at Lagoa’s service park (FATACIL), followed by a regrouping in Silves. The highlight is the 24 km Power Stage, which is expected to determine the champions.

Spectators will be able to watch the action from eight viewing areas, including a “city stage” in Portimão for the final podium ceremony set against the backdrop of the Hotel Algarve Casino.

Fans can stay updated on the latest news from Rallye Casinos do Algarve by following CAAL’s social media channels, official website, and through the Sportity app (password: RCA).

  • Hidden away off the beaten track, near Silves, Quinta das Maravilhas is a haven of comfort

Hidden away off the beaten track, near Silves, Quinta das Maravilhas is a haven of comfort

Charming luxury in the midst of nature, Quinta das Maravilhas can be enjoyed at any time of the year

    – December 2, 2023 | Text Beatriz Maio | Photos Pascale van Reijn

The new project by Dutch couple Jeannette den Blijker and Jordy Koningh is a sight to behold. A property next to the Arade River, in Silves, so versatile that whether you are celebrating a wedding or taking part in a team building event, the feeling of comfort and proximity to nature is inevitable.

Looking for an investment in any country, Jeannette and Jordy came across this place, which was a huge challenge from the outset and therefore a source of fascination and interest for both of them.

Since April 2022, they have been working and investing in an extensive renovation project to make this not only their “happy place” but also that of all those who visit them and are looking to socialise, relax or simply get creative. “Here, you can connect with other people or even with yourself,” Jeannette noted.

An old house and a garden that seemed abandoned have given way to rustic yet modern décor, a heated swimming pool and towering palm trees. However, its essence has not been lost, even though it is now very luxurious. The olive trees, a species native to Portugal, continue to grow, as do the reeds near the water and the walls decorated with photographs of typically Portuguese scenery remind us of the country’s history. As for the structure of the house, the owners have opted to keep the foundation, but to make it more spacious inside, which encourages cohabitation and harmony for all.

“It’s chic, but still, you are in the middle of nature. There is this cosy environment, this is a place where people can be themselves and feel at home,” underlined Jeannette when explaining that they favoured stylish amenities and therefore created outdoor showers and toilets, so that outside guests can also enjoy the property. Even though the space is large, that does not make us feel any less at home. On the contrary, its size gives everyone privacy due to the numerous rooms and the hidden corners outside. Those who stay have the pleasure of enjoying incredible days in an unparalleled atmosphere, with romantic and adventurous experiences, and the enviable view of the hills.

Be it summer or winter, Quinta das Maravilhas can be enjoyed at any time, with a fireplace in a ground-floor room overlooking the pool for the cold days. Listening to the rain, seeing the splashes on the large glass doors and coming face to face with a green backdrop gives you a feeling of cosiness and lightness. This is a place where serenity is abundant and the feeling of well-being is common to those who visit this adults-only accommodation. Its name, meaning “Farm of Marvels”, came about naturally when Jeannette and Jordy noticed a similar reaction of surprise and happiness in people when they realised that there is much more beyond the building that can be seen from the road. “They marvel at the place,” Jeannette revealed.

This is a concept that is still rarely seen in the country, where fun, serenity and, optionally, work come together. The choice of how to enjoy it for, at least, four nights is up to who rents the property, which can be adapted to different intentions, with space for various activities. Located in a quiet area with friendly neighbours, Quinta das Maravilhas is fully rented out for groups of 16, can accommodate up to 200 people, offers special services such as catering, private chef, massages or sparkling wine on arrival, and is perfectly situated for golfers, motorbikers or hikers. Any requests can be dealt with by the welcoming staff who are more than glad to help and make the stay unforgettable. “We have our contacts and can make the events memorable. Everything can be arranged under certain conditions,” Jeannette assured.

Guests have at their disposal eight double rooms on different levels of the house, which are cleaned daily, as well as two indoor lounge areas. Outside there is a bar, large grounds, a riverside walkway, a small boat and a large, wooden deck area where ceremonies can take place. “You can come for a retreat or to a party. For both, it’s very suitable and cosy”, the owner emphasised, clarifying that the intention is for people to come to “slow down, catch their breath, enjoy the scenery and the moment or come for a celebration in a pleasant space”.

Jeannette, a former classical ballet dancer, and Jordy, a kitesurfer, met at the beginning of 2021 in Holland and, since then, their relationship has continued to grow, as have their ambitions and achievements. Besides being a sportsman, industrial designer and enjoying travelling around the world, Jordy also has an entrepreneurial streak; he has already opened a kiter’s school in the Dominican Republic and owns a hotel in his home country.

“Everything with us is always fast-paced. We have the same motivation and dedication to our projects”, Jeannette recognised reflecting that, whilst Jordy is the one who “makes quick and assertive decisions”, she, on the other hand, is “more careful”, but still plenty adventurous. It was also during the Covid-19 pandemic that Jeannette met Ellen Schoonhoven, their right-hand in this challenge, whilst helping a Dutch organisation that brings people to Loulé for a retreat focused on treating their eating disorders. This experience was decisive in Jeannette’s move to Portugal and, months later, led to Jordy’s arrival. She became passionate about the country, but even more about the region, which, together with Jordy’s entrepreneurial vision, gave rise to an unrivalled project.

  • From generation to generation, one family continues to pass on the traditions of locally produced regional liqueurs

From generation to generation, one family continues to pass on the traditions of locally produced regional liqueurs

    A taste of the Algarve

    – September 7, 2023 | Text Beatriz Maio | Photos Charlotte Cockayne/Open Media Group

It is in the heart of the mountains that some of the region’s most flavourful liqueurs and firewater are born, produced by a couple who have collected centuries’ worth of knowledge for their production. In this family, it is a tradition to provide for those who enjoy a drink at the end of the meal with the most distinctive flavours, a practice that started with the actual owner’s great-great-grandfather.

Jorge Lima and his wife Esmeralda, both from São Marcos da Serra, in Silves, are the owners of Regionalarte, a company that was born in 1999 with only three drinks and has not stopped growing since. At the moment, they have 17 liqueurs that stand out on the market, with something for everyone, even those with peculiar taste.

From the typical flavours of the Algarve region such as carob, fig, almond and honey to more unique creations like the Folar liqueur, made with milk, herbs and sugar; the Aphrodisiac, made with ginger, ginseng and pau de Cabinda (yohimbe bark); and the Devil’s Breath, with a spicy kick.

The range of options is wide, whether for a more refined or casual occasion, with cinnamon, pennyroyal and lemon liqueurs also available as well as a special one called Licor da Serra (Liqueur from the Hills ) made with port wine flavoured with cinnamon. But it doesn’t stop here. Jorge not only makes liqueurs but also gins, firewater (aguardente), honeydew (melosa) and honey. Like the liqueurs, the Caesar’s Gin, Hibiscus and Cobiçado brands are also exclusive products born from his creativity.

Many of the productions are a result of experiments, together with the curiosity of the owners, friends or customers, with special requests always welcome and enthusiastically received. The Aphrodisiac liqueur, for example, was created in response to the owner of an aphrodisiac restaurant, in Faro, who idealised a signature drink for the establishment.

From this order, two drinks were made with the same ingredients, a 17%-proof liqueur and a 42%-proof firewater. “People liked it and we ended up selling thousands of bottles,” recalled Jorge, emphasising that “the priority in orders is to provide a solution and please the customer.”

Currently, they are developing a special order called the Apple Fire, a firewater of apple and cinnamon, which will be exported directly to Spain. Companies and individuals both national and international appreciate Regionalarte drinks, distributed all over Portugal and even in the islands.

The biggest foreign buyer of these liqueurs comes from the Netherlands, after a group stopped by the facilities in São Marcos da Serra and sampled the drinks. Four months later, an article was published in a Dutch magazine about Regionalarte liqueurs. Also, the fact that there is a camping site, whose owner is Dutch, with about 90% of the customers also Dutch, means that many visit Jorge and end up buying bottles to take to Holland.

In spite of that, their biggest fans are the locals. “Our drinks have sweet and intense flavours, just as Portuguese people like it,” Jorge commented, explaining that “some are stronger than others”, but all are “great at the end of a meal”.

Another of the Algarve company’s specialties is the aged firewater with a woody aroma and flavour, after fermenting in barrels for about seven months – a meticulous process since if the fermentation time is exceeded the drink will have too much wood flavour.

This production differs from normal firewater by being more flavoured and stronger as well as by its browner colour. Because it is so unique, it is the drink that honours the owner’s mother, Dona Inácia, part of the 4th generation of distillers in the family who has always been linked to the medronho harvest and is therefore considered “the inspiration behind the business”.

The place where the liqueurs are sold carries history and feelings, even the decoration was thought out in detail. The wood used to make the shelves is over 100 years old  – it came from the distillery of Jorge’s great-grandfather, grandfather and father. “It was not only a way to save and recycle wood, but also to bring everyone’s presence here,” explained the owner.

Therefore, it is a family business where everyone helps. Jorge’s eldest daughter, Rute Lima, with a degree in Public Relations, is the one who promotes the liqueurs at many craft fairs and makes their flavours known. “She has the gift of gab and customer service which allows her to respond to people who are curious about the liqueurs and want to know more,” commented Jorge.

In truth, Regionalarte was not meant to be a liqueur brand, but a craft brand, dedicated to the production of stone and iron materials for construction sites, as well as furniture such as beds, sofas and tables. However, the desire to make drinks that last a lifetime, even after opening if they are properly preserved, was stronger.

Although the present is bright and the future looks promising, Jorge revealed that “the goal is to grow, but always with the feet on the ground”.

By this, he meant that to maintain the quality of his products he will not produce large quantities “because this can cause the quality and essential characteristics of the liqueurs to be lost”, so he will keep producing through traditional methods in a small distillery. “We will do our best to keep growing. We want more and more people to take our liqueurs home,” he stated.

Local Artist explores her ‘90s journeys with ‘Colours of Zanzibar’ exhibition in Silves

Artist BJ Boulter’s colourful artworks feature the enchanted sandy beach island of Zanzibar

    – June 16, 2023

BJ Boulter Colours of Zanzibar in Silves, June 17 2023

BJ Boulter will present her ‘Colours of Zanzibar’ exhibition at the restored Casa da Cultura in Silves, opening on Saturday, June 17 at the Casa da Cultura Luso-Árabe e Mediterrânica in Silves, at 4pm.

Her artworks are figurative, reflecting her journeys to Zanzibar in the early nineties, reflecting that the island is being affected by the recent influx of tourism, depriving local communities of access to marine and coastal resources, since they are now the centre of tourist activity.

    About the artist

BJ Boulter grew up in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanganyika, on the Indian Ocean. She attended Saint Martin’s School of Art and Lucie Clayton School of Design in London. Arriving in Portugal to join her family recently arrived from Tanzania over 60 years ago, she settled in Algarve, making it her home, her base from which to explore other countries.

Her lifelong career as a production designer for films began in Hong Kong and has taken her around the world, always behind the camera. BJ Boulter has recently also produced a movie about the Algarve called “The Right Juice – An Algarve Story“.

Drawing and painting were an integral part of her work in set design. “I love creating a scene to tell a story.” This is a process which she currently indulges in full-time.

Nowadays, her sketchbook is always with her, ready to capture the scene, from which she draws inspiration to portray a story on canvas.

The Casa da Cultura is located at Largo da República (the western end of Silves next to the High School).

This summer exhibition will be open on weekdays from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm and is free.

Casa da Cultura is located at Largo da República (the western end of Silves next to the High School).

    Artist’s statement

As BJ Boulter writes: “Zanzibar. The very name evokes enchantment. Her palm-fringed pearlescent sandy beaches are washed by a pale, transparent, azure sea. This Spice Island enriches our palate with exotic flavours and fragrances and is enhanced by her colourful people.

“On returning in 1990 after many years, I worked on a short film. I began to wander through the narrow streets of Stone Town, Zanzibar’s only city. I marvelled at gigantic, lavishly carved doors opening into luminous courtyards. There were tiny shops, darkly full of ancient wares. Baskets full of spices were displayed in the market hall. Bustling fishermen delivered the day’s catch to the harbour master, and bicycles and mopeds paraded by, piled high with goods.

BJ Boulter exhibition Colours of Zanzibar in Silves, June 17 2023

“Hiring a little bike, I tootled through spice groves, banana plantations, and palm-thatched villages and schools. I paused at silvery beaches to watch boatbuilders working. The excitement of enterprise was palpable, craftsmen ready to chat and tell their stories in musical, lilting, Spice Island Swahili. The people of Zanzibar are imprinted in my memory, with their enthusiasm to be involved in the film, and with their delight when their craftsmanship was admired and appreciated.

“My memories bring the voices of Zanzibar to this exhibition. Collected in my studio is a cache of colourful kangas with Swahili proverbs. My challenge is to tell their stories. Zanzibar was a joyous experience, and as an artist, I try to capture the texture and colours of these gorgeous fabrics.”

Al-Mutamid Festival returns to Silves and Lagoa

February brings back the annual Arab music festival Al-Mutamid

    – February 6, 2023

February marks the return of the Al-Mutamid Music Festival, which will bring traditional Arab music to several towns in the Algarve and further north.

This year’s festival will feature performances by “different groups specialised in the sounds of Al-Andalus, but also the music and dances of the Middle East, Maghreb and Eastern Mediterranean”.

The performances will be held in Lagoa and Silves which were once part of the territory “formerly known as Al-Andalus during the time of Al-Mutamid”.

    Carlos do Carmo auditorium

Lagoa will host a performance by the Sufi Soul Ensemble – which comprises performers from Tunisia, Morocco and Syria – at the Carlos do Carmo auditorium on February 25. Tickets can be purchased here (www.bol.pt) or at Fnac, Worten, Ctt, El Corte Inglés.

Monia Abdelali from Tunisia will perform at the Mascarenhas Gregório Theatre in Silves on March 11. Tickets can be purchased here (www.bol.pt) or at Fnac, Worten, Ctt, El Corte Inglés.

The event is described as a tribute to King Al-Mutamid, the son and successor to the King of Seville, Al Mutadid. Born as Muhammad Ibn Abbad in Beja in 1040, Al-Mutamid was named governor of Silves when he was just 12 years old, having ascended in 1069 to the throne of Seville, “the strongest kingdom among those that were created in Al-Andalus after the fall of the Cordoba caliphate”. In 1088, he was dethroned by the Almoravids and fled to Agmat, south of Marrakech, where he would die in 1095. His grave, which remains preserved until today, has become a “symbol of the most beautiful times of Al-Andalus,” organisers Ibérica Eventos say.

  • The History Behind Silve’s Unique City Stone

The History Behind Silve’s Unique City Stone

    Bruno Matos Vale Fuzeiros

Lady in Red: Silve’s Reddish Stone can be seen everywhere in the city, including the Castle

    – December 6, 2021

Silves sandstone is a distinct and unique stone that can be found in several constructions in and around the town, including its imposing castle. It is extracted from a quarry in Vale Fuzeiros by a local family who has owned it for at least 100 years.

It all started with José Joaquim, in Vale Fuzeiros

It all started with the great-grandfather of Bruno Matos, one of the quarry’s heirs, José Joaquim, who tried extracting the stone from several areas unsuccessfully until purchasing the quarry in Vale Fuzeiros. Over time, his family became responsible for providing sandstone for most of Silves’ constructions. His family even became known in Silves by the nickname ‘derrubas’, used to describe someone who uses brute force.

    Bruno Matos Vale Fuzeiros

As he explained, “everything you see in Silves that was built in the last 100 years” likely was built with the unique, red-coloured sandstone. This includes the brickwork of several houses, the recent renovations carried out at the local church and Islamic walls, the castle’s grand staircase which his father worked on for six months and even the local courtrooms.

    Bruno Matos, Vale Fuzeiros

The Silve’s Sandstone and the Cork Industry

The sandstone was also used by the local cork industry which needed a special utensil to sharpen their cutting tools. “They realised that this stone sharpens very well,” said Matos, who as a child would help his father extract the stone at the quarry.

Cork producers started ordering 12cm-thick grindstones, while farmers also ordered sandstone basins for their pigsties and pens. While around a century has passed, the rock extraction process has remained the same over time, given the delicate nature of the sandstone. “If I were to use a machine here, the hydraulic force would ruin and break the rock,” he said. Only human force and a limited array of tools are used.

    Bruno Matos, Vale Fuzeiros

    One stone for different uses

The quarry has two different areas, one of them with a “very hard, very good” rock which can be used for stonemasonry, while the other has a “softer” rock which is better for “decorative” uses.

The stone does not “like” fire or heat, but works very well with water, Matos explained. It retains liquids well and is “slip-resistant”.

    A family heritage with history

According to Matos, this is why demand for Silves’ sandstone is growing. And there is still a lot left to extract. “We could go another two or three metres deep, but our family’s policy was always to save the rock as much as we can for the coming generation,” said Matos, explaining that the family only extracts as much as is needed for the orders they have received.

    Bruno Matos, Vale Fuzeiros

While he preferred not to reveal the market price of the stone, Matos said that the company is profitable enough to be his full-time job. “I wouldn’t trade this for a well-paid job in an office,” he said, explaining that sentimental reasons led to his career choice.

“Before he died, my father told us that this was what paid for our food for many years. And he asked us to continue working with the stone, as we always have.”

A dream to turn the Silve’s Reddish Sandstone into a Municipal Heritage

According to Bruno Matos, keeping the quarry alive and active is a source of pride for the family — especially because it will become part of the future Algarvensis Geopark.

    Bruno Matos Vale Fuzeiros

“I would like to see Silves sandstone recognised as municipal heritage. I know we are talking about a private business, and it is hard to get this message across, but the truth is that this also belongs to the people of Silves and Messines. I say this from the bottom of my heart. I hope in future there will be a Sandstone Route,” said Matos, who added that the project is already being developed by the local council.

“I would like to welcome people here, so they could see my work and the quarry, and see how this stone is used in historic and contemporary constructions,” he added.

A secret adults-only culinary escape in the countryside

Take two passionate young Italians, a love of rural living, a taste for all things delicious, a valley of orange groves and cats, and you’ve got Gato Preto de Silves.

Just a little inland from the stunning old Moorish capital of the Algarve, Silves, lays a secluded, luxurious and adults-only B&B with guest cabins occupying a tranquil spot in the heart of the countryside. Inside met with owners Gloria and Matteo for a beautiful home-cooked breakfast and tour around the property. The driveway gives you a sneak preview of what awaits you thanks to the mature and well-kept gardens with only the noise of the birds chirping, which instantly provide the feeling of relaxation. “Our B&B is a rural retreat made for long evenings and lazy mornings. Here, we have a pool and hammocks for relaxing,” Matteo explains. “Breakfast is a slow affair, showcasing regional cuisine and served either at the tables under the shade of the pergola or on the guests’ private terraces. The garden and verandas are the perfect places to while away the hours or even an entire day.”

The couple moved to Silves some 10 years ago and have been busy creating their vision of tranquillity and comfort away from the stresses of modern life. There are currently two luxurious cabins, with plans in place for a third. They are located in the garden in secluded positions to ensure privacy, with terraces, fully equipped kitchenette and a glorious view over the sprawling orange groves. Gloria and Matteo took great care when designing everything, and this is particularly evident in the cabins. They didn’t go for the easy options when choosing finishes, with details such as a very charming little window that’s been carved into the kitchenettes that gives the feeling of being at one with the countryside. Each guest accommodation has its own theme, with the two cabins picking local accents, incorporating Moorish and beach styles. Within the main villa, there are three guest suites, which are spacious and airy, all with private outdoor space and amenities. All rooms have been fitted with air-conditioning and have floor-to-ceiling windows to make sure guests are always connected to their environment.

The heart of the property has to be the beautiful pool area, with big mature trees offering shade from the soaring summer temperatures and the communal outdoor dining spaces, where guests can enjoy chatting and stargazing in the evening. There’s a two-bedroom villa complete with its own pool adjacent to the B&B, but this is a self-catering option and is also adults only. All suites, cabins and the villa come with everything you could need to enjoy a peaceful stay.

The couple also runs a variety of tailor-made gastronomic and tour-based activities that they’ve moulded together with a few hand-picked suppliers to ensure the best possible experiences and quality. The tours enable guests to set off into the hills on an electric bike and enjoy a delicious picnic in the wilderness or take a very Algarvean cataplana cookery course. Another popular experience includes a packed day to discover Silves and its local bounty, the humble orange, with lots of stops along the way to recharge and enjoy some local treats. There is also a “meet the farmer” tour, where guests can really get in touch with some local characters and see how the Algarvean way of life was in the not so distant past. It’s an ideal starting point for outdoor programmes such as hiking along the Via Algarviana trail, bike rides and off-road activities into the dams. Back at Gato Preto de Silves, on Thursdays, Gloria produces a homemade dinner with delicious and traditional food, creating an exclusive menu inspired by Algarvean cuisine with an Italian touch. All the ingredients are locally sourced and usually from the Silves market in the city. The couple recently acquired a ruin at the bottom of the property, where Gloria will work her magic with her authentic cookery and private dining workshop.

Driven by their love for quality travel, adventure and cuisine, Gloria and Matteo bring their personal flair to their ever-growing piece of heaven in the Algarve. Silves is undergoing somewhat of a facelift recently, with people dedicating their energies to promoting rural tourism. Only a 15 minutes’ drive from Lagoa and touristy villages of Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, you will find yourself transported back in time, to a simpler and more authentic Portugal. Boasting a spectacular castle, winding river and beautiful old buildings, Silves is the perfect off-season destination.

  • Cruising to Silves

    Cruising to Silves

With the heated buzz of summer a distant memory and the beaches and roads back to their normal pace, the Algarve still has a lot to offer in the winter months. Ferragudo and Silves are at their prime in this time of year, with lower temperatures and the children back at school, it’s the perfect
time to do a bit of sightseeing and relax from the hubbub of the high season.

We were greeted at Ferragudo harbour by Fiona, who explained the itinerary and told us that her husband Luis, our captain and tour guide for the day, has been operating his tours with his converted, traditional wooden fishing boat on the Arade to Silves and the Sítio das Fontes in Estômbar since 2013. Born and raised in Ferragudo and a fisherman for 35 years, there are few people better qualified to guide you on an Arade boat trip. Right on time, Luis pulled up at the harbour wall and welcomed our group of nine – the maximum capacity – aboard his vessel where we settled into our spots
ready for the trip to begin.

Our skipper began to pull away from Ferragudo, navigating the river across the tides to cause the least buoyancy on the small boat, and he began to explain some very interesting facts about the history of the river. According to him, it has changed almost beyond recognition in his lifetime, with the introduction of large canals to allow vessels to move without hindrance and avoid the series of sandbanks on the outer limits of the river.

As we continued up the river, under the bridge, Luis told us about the importance of the old sardine factories, of which there were 10 in Portimão and 13 in Ferragudo. “The factories were one of the main employers in the area, with the men working sea-based jobs like fishing and loading or unloading, while the women were factory-based, cleaning and sorting the fish on the production line,” he explained. “You can imagine that when these factories closed, there was a bit of an economic depression here. You can see all the chimneys in the area, now with stork nests on them. They were the chimneys from the fish factories, they represent a big part of our history in Ferragudo.”

Luis passed by the Portimão Museum to show us the baskets and hauling cranes on display at the pier, which put things into perspective.

Sailing under the rail and road bridges, he told us many tales of how life used to be for a Ferragudo fisherman and the changes in regulations and economy that lead him to convert his traditional fishing vessel into an excursion boat.

Wildly knowledgeable about his surroundings, Luis talked about the local wildlife, flora and fauna and was happy to answer the guests’ questions and provide a rounded commentary on the areas that we sailed through, stopping at various points of interest along the way to give us little gems of information from the past and present.

He spoke about the Moors invading the area and how the Portuguese people joined together and used the various access points to finally fight them off, back to North Africa, and explained the importance of these canals to the local farmers, salt harvesters, rice paddy’s and the ecosystem in general.

The scenery is incredibly lush and at certain points you could imagine yourself sailing in South Louisiana with a pair of eyes peering out of the water. Of course there is nothing even remotely dangerous in the river, it’s mostly home to some bass and other small fish that provide sustenance for the Heron and Stork population.

Sailing through the bamboo-lined canal, Silves appeared in the horizon and we docked just by the old Roman bridge, where we disembarked for break of an hour and a half to explore the old town and grab some lunch before heading back to Ferragudo where the tour ends.

The Silves tour costs €30 and lasts around four and a half hours, and Luis even provides some soft drinks and beers. The couple also offers a trip to the caves and to the Sítio das Fontes natural reserve in Estombar.

  • One night in Casa do Serro

One night in Casa do Serro

Inside magazine visited the magnificent, centennial, palatial guesthouse in Silves for an unforgettable getaway

For many years, I’ve driven past the beautiful old building and thought how wonderful it would be to have a look inside the imposing house on the hill. I finally got the chance following the charming owners’, Jorge and Manuela Craveirinha, decision in August 2015 to turn a selection of the rooms into four en-suite bedrooms and open their home as a guest house. Both hosts were at home and offered a very warm welcome. Manuela told Inside Magazine: “I bought the house around 30 years ago and it had been lying empty for some 40 years prior to that. You can imagine how it was when I got the keys. I’d been in love with the building for some years prior to buying it and was very excited to get started on the renovation.”

Being empty for so long and tradesmen being scarce in the Algarve brought all kinds of additional problems to the renovation, but Manuela took a very pragmatic approach to the project and allowed herself the time to find the right people and materials required to bring the house back to its original glory. It’s her eye for detail, personal touches and abundant taste that have made the guest house so very special. The house is actually even more impressive on the inside than I expected. The first thing you see is a glittering, 300kg, Iranian crystal chandelier hanging splendidly in the middle of the library over a handmade Tapete de Arraiolos (Arrraiolos rug). Walking through the large corridors was a joy as Manuela’s lifetime collection of original antiques and her portraits are tastefully displayed. The four rooms are stunning and all unique, with an excellent assortment of toiletries. With a constant temperature throughout the house, it is incredibly comfortable along with being spotlessly clean.

The terraced gardens and patios offer amazing views over Silves and to the castle and the covered Jacuzzi/plunge pool by the fishpond is a great addition. The breakfast is something else and is served in the communal dining room which has the most beautifully restored ceiling with another gorgeous chandelier that shines over the traditional and delicious feast, including homemade preserves and enough fresh food to feed a small army.
