Seeing the Algarve from 1,000 feet above sea level is an unforgettable experience

The video documentary “The Algarve in the Portuguese Discoveries”, produced by New Light Pictures for the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), received two top awards at leading national tourism film festivals.

In late October, the film was distinguished with the Best Documentary Award for Tourist Destinations Regions at the 16th edition of the ART&TUR International Tourism Film Festival.

The festival, which took place in Caldas da Rainha, showcased the best tourism audiovisual productions made in Portugal and the world, bringing together 262 films from 47 countries. Earlier that same month, in Sesimbra, the film won the Special Jury Prize at the Finisterra – Arrábida Film Art & Tourism Festival in the Short Documentary category.

“The Algarve’s historical connection to the Portuguese Discoveries is an asset that is still underused to promote the region as a cultural tourism destination. Therefore, it is with great satisfaction that we receive the news of this film’s double distinction,” says André Gomes, president of RTA, which is set to enhance this cultural offer to attract unique visitors, sharing the Algarve’s role in this historical context.

The film highlights the role the Western Algarve, and in particular Lagos and Sagres, played in the Discoveries: “This setting, the coastline between Lagos and Sagres, thanks to its privileged geographical position, was the starting point of this whole adventure. It changed the world forever, it gave birth to globalisation,” says the video documentary’s narrator.

“It’s been more than 500 years, and the memory of the great Portuguese Epic still echoes in the present. Any of us Portuguese, if we close our eyes by the shore, can hear the adventure, courage and bravery of these men, built differently. Of these men of will and intent, whose boldness and faith made them believe in the possibility of going further.”

The award-winning film, produced as part of the EXPLORATERRA application, co-financed by the INTERREG V-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) programme, lasts around 13 minutes and is available in Portuguese, English and Spanish on the VisitAlgarve YouTube channel.

Silves’s Castle received once again the “Regional 5 Stars Award” in the category “National Monuments”, being one of the seven icons selected for the Algarve region, alongside the Cataplana dish, the Algarve orange, the region of Estoi, the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Praia da Rocha Beach and the Monchique hills.

“It’s a great pride to have the Silves’s Castle win once again,” stated Silves mayor Rosa Palma. It is also a double win for the borough, as among the winners of the ‘Portuguese Traditional Products’ is the Algarve orange, with half of its production coming from Silves.

The “Regional 5 Stars Award” measures the degree of quality and satisfaction that products, services, and Portuguese original brands provide to customers. The awards’ evaluation follows the criteria of the five main variables that influence customers’ purchasing decisions.

Winners were selected through national voting, with citizens invited to select what Portugal has best via an inquiry.

In this edition, 425,000 Portuguese customers voted across 912 brands and national icons.

Tapas Route (Rota do Petisco) Wins National Gastronomic Award

Rota do Petisco (Tapas Route) awarded national gastronomic prize at the National Tourism 2021 Awards

    – March 3, 2022

The Algarve’s Rota do Petisco (Tapas Route) event has won a national gastronomic tourism award at the Prémio Nacional de Turismo 2021, which recognises the best companiespractices, and tourism projects in Portugal.

Organised by the Expresso newspaper and the BPI bank, the awards feature different categories each year. For this year, the categories were the following: Gastronomic Tourism (which Rota do Petisco won); Innovative Tourism; Sustainable Tourism; Inclusive Tourism and Authentic Tourism. Tourism entrepreneur André Jordan received the Career Award (Prémio Carreira).

To win one of the awards, there are several factors taken into account, such as the adaptability to the Covid-19 pandemic, the relations established with the consumers, innovation and compliance with Sustainable Development Goals.

The Gastronomic Tourism award had a stiff competition of 439 bids, leaving only five finalists at the end, with the top spot belonging to Rota do Petisco, which is organised by the Teia D’Impulsos association.

“We are so proud to receive (the award), but we also give ourselves more responsibility to continue working and improving the quality of Rota do Petisco,” said Teia D’Impulsos president Luís Gonçalves.

“It was with great pleasure and pride that the whole Teia D’Impusos team received this national award,” added Rota do Petisco coordinator Nuno Vieira, who stressed that the event “directly involves” thousands of people in the Algarve and acts as a “motor” for the region’s economy and its tourism sector.

According to Vieira, this award will “encourage more partners to join Rota do Petisco and contribute to its consolidation as one of the largest gastronomic events in the country”.

New Rota do Petisco edition on the way, with new routes to promote local gastronomy

This year’s edition of Rota do Petisco is already under works and will take place between September 14 and October 16 in several municipalities in the Algarve. New ‘routes’ are being prepared, such as the “Memory Route” and “Wine Cellar Route”.

The event brings together hundreds of restaurants and eateries in the Algarve, each of which presents a small-sized dish or dessert at a small, fixed price. The goal is to encourage clients to discover new places to eat and promote local gastronomy.
