There is a new dining experience at Vilalara Thalassa Resort’s B&G restaurant

In an intimate and cosy atmosphere, Porches’ Vilalara Thalassa Resort welcomes guests for a unique tasting experience at the fine dining restaurant of the luxury resort which is part of the Blue & Green Hotels & Resorts chain.

Overlooking the sea and with live music nights, B&G stands out from the resort’s other restaurantsTerrace Grill and Pizzeria Grotta Rotonda – for its new gastronomic experience.

Portuguese traditions and local produce are prioritised in this space where the friendliness of the staff provides a warm welcome to diners, further enhanced by the kindness of sommelier Vitaliy Lesyuk.

Available in six or seven moments, the new tasting menu called “Maré”, which includes bread, snacks, starter, main course, dessert and petit-fours, brings the flavour of the sea, through various fish and seafood dishes, and of the mountains. To start, as it could not be any other way in a “Portuguese house”, freshly baked bread is placed on the table, made with national wheat flour by a local baker, served with homemade butter with natural fermentation, flavoured with seaweed from the Algarve coast.

To savour this moment, diners are invited to share a generous piece that must be broken with their hands, which breaks the usual formal atmosphere of the typical fine-dining experience. When emphasising the importance of the meal, chef Diogo Pereira explained that this act has “a symbolic meaning” and makes “the moment more intimate because it requires trust and proximity”.

    Vilalara Thalassa Resort’s B&G restaurant - 1

To prepare the menu, the chef, a native of Faro, said that “the inspirations all come from nature and our traditions”, stressing that “Portugal has a unique cuisine, ingredients and techniques”. Next, diners are surprised with three small snacks with traditional flavours, which should be tasted in the following order: fig with ham and muscatel sauce; sun-dried moray eel skin, fried in extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with Madeira molasses and dried chillies; and mackerel with sea lettuce marinated with garum, a condiment of Roman origins, resulting from the fermentation of blue fish with salt for several months.

The dishes presented are intended to celebrate authenticity. As such, there is a choice of fish and meat, with starters such as carabineiro em crudo (raw scarlet prawn) from Vila Real de Santo António served with its grilled head; fresh scallops with Silves-style arjamolho, made from tomatoes, cucumber and peppers lightly macerated with olive oil and vinegar; tuna tartar, fresh herbs and trout roe; braised bonito with fennel and sour leaves and oysters farmed in the Ria de Alvor, prepared in a light escabeche sauce.

The selection presented, which pays homage to fishermen and shellfish harvesters, was carefully planned, having undergone changes from the initial idea. For example, “the scallops were supposed to be served with a gazpacho, but we ended up going for the arjamolho that makes the broth lighter”, explained the chef. For the fish dishes, the options are fried sunfish with goose barnacles from the rugged Sagres cliffs and millet; grouper, caldeirada broth, clams and fried bread; and one-sided tuna, cooked on one side with salted toucinho (bacon), parsnips and a semi-dry Madeira wine sauce.

    Vilalara Thalassa Resort’s B&G restaurant

The choice of each specific fish stems from the chef’s knowledge and familiarity with the sea and fishing. In particular, he made a point of serving sunfish because it is “often considered rubbish because it is difficult to work with due to its very tough skin and because it is difficult to get hold of, so it is not used a lot”. He wanted to test ageing it and had no doubt that it would have a place on the menu.

Meat dishes include black Alentejo pork neck, Provençal-style tian and prune chutney; aged Arouquesa beef, served with boiled corn and carob, slow-cooked with fig wood ash, a technique that dates back to the Aztecs; and duck breast, aged for five days to achieve crispy skin and tender meat, served with Jerusalem artichokes and Óbidos sour cherry sauce.

The pork neck was chosen to honour this “gastronomic icon” and the specific part of the animal was chosen because it is a piece that the chef loves to work with and can be used in various dishes. The last dish is also one of the chef’s favourites, as it reminds him of the duck rice made by his grandmother and highlights the meat’s versatility, since it can be served “both fully cooked and more on the rare side”.

Desserts include soufflé de melosa, a Vilalara icon that has been on the menu since 1972, made from medronho and honey from the Monchique hills; tangerine, parfait, granita and pickle, with various textures and flavoured with pennyroyal; and chocolate and carob and pastel de nata reinvented by António, master pastry chef at the resort for over three decades.

The menu also has a vegan option with seven moments featuring almond gazpacho and caramelised onions, pumpkin steak, spinach and ancient wheat, mushroom chou farci, yam puré and pumpkin sauce and chocolate and carob. The rest are surprises, chosen by the chef himself.

A New four-star Boutique Hotel in Monchique is “a paradise between the mountains and the sea”

One with nature: Earlier this year, the former D. Carlos Regis Hotel became the Pure Monchique Hotel

    – September 9, 2022

In April, a new four-star boutique hotel was inaugurated in Monchique, promising to create a “paradise between the mountains and the sea”, following the complete revamp of the former D. Carlos Regis Hotel. It boasts 22 rooms and suites and is managed by Unlock Boutique Hotels.

Pure Monchique Hotel is set within the small beauty spot of Caldas de Monchique and is one of the four hotels that are part of the Villa Termal Caldas de Monchique Spa Resort. The hotel has been recommended by the prestigious Condé Nast Johansens guide and has also obtained the coveted Biosphere Sustainable Tourism certification.

“It is a new way of discovering and living the Algarve in the mountains, enjoying the sunrise with the chirping of birds, mild evenings, warm summer nights or the comfort of winter near the hotel bar’s fireplace, always surrounded by green nature,” said the management. Miguel Velez, CEO of Unlock Boutique Hotels, says the group recognised the untapped potential of Monchique early on and that its investment has helped strengthen Monchique as a “high-level and unique destination”.

“It was always a goal of shareholders to renovate the Pure Monchique Hotel, because it is without a doubt an exclusive product and which deserves to offer a quality service,” said the CEO. “Being exclusive in the Algarve, we wanted our guests to feel the synergies (of the area), enjoy the surrounding natural beauty, the fantastic alkaline waters, as well as the comfort and service of excellence, which is what Pure Monchique offers.”

Velez also said the group will continue to invest in the “quality and exclusivity that characterises us and which makes this hotel a unique space that our guests will want to return to.” The hotel features the Pure Bar & Restaurant, which serves snacks and drinks as well as exclusive dishes from the ‘Unlocking Portuguese Flavours’ concept, and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Guests can also enjoy the facilities at the nearby Villa Termal, such as the ‘Spa Termal’ which uses Monchique’s famous 9.5pH water (described as “the most alkaline water in Portugal and one of the most alkaline in the world”), its outdoor pools and its bars and restaurant serving traditional food.

There is also a wealth of outdoor activities to enjoy, from hikes along the Monchique-Alto da Fóia trail, which connects Monchique to the region’s highest peak, to bike rides.

New Ferragudo Hotel aims to showcase “Authentic Algarve Experience”

Between land and sea: the new Brícia du Mar Hotel in Ferragudo

new Brícia du Mar Hotel in Ferragudo
    – April 7, 2022

A new rural hotel has just opened in Ferragudo, Lagoa. Brícia Du Mar is located between the countryside and the sea in Vale da Areia, just a short walk away from stunning beaches and the picturesque village of Ferragudo.

The four-star hotel boasts 56 rooms44 studios with a kitchenette and 12 standard rooms — as well as a restaurant, an event area, two bars, and a gym and sauna. Brícia Du Mar held its ‘soft opening’ in March with the plan being to have every amenity the hotel has to offer up and running by May or June.

new Brícia du Mar Hotel in Ferragudo

The project is a dream come true for Boto Oliveira, a wellknown local builder with over 40 years of experience in his trade who, for the first time, has built his very own hotel from the ground up. “It makes me very proud to see this hotel open,” Boto Oliveira told us. “There is no other hotel in Ferragudo quite like this one.”

new Brícia du Mar Hotel in Ferragudo

Boto Oliveira started working in the construction sector when he was just 12 years old and has been running his company — Construções Boto Oliveira Lda. — for over four decades. However, building his own hotel is a dream he has had for some time.

“I want to slow down a bit and focus on one thing, so I chose to move forward with this project,” he said. As the builderturned- hotelier told us,“There are practically no hotels in Ferragudo, especially of this kind.” The project was already moving forward when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, and while it was “obviously frightening”, Boto said that it did not deter his plans for one second. “I’m the kind of person who wants to move forward,” he said. “I’m a perfectionist, I built my business myself and I am proud of what I have achieved.”

A taste of the “authentic Algarve”

Brícia Du Mar aims to provide a personalised experience for guests thanks to the hotel’s attention to detail. Hotel staff (a team of 18 people) will try to give guests a taste of the “authentic Algarve”, an experience only someone who is from the region or has lived here for years knows about.

While employees will be available to provide the best tips on how to enjoy the real Algarve, Brícia Du Mar will also boast its own restaurant. Du Mar Restaurant will focus on serving typical Portuguese food, made with local produce such as fresh fish, while event area Du Rústico will be open for themed events and will have its own independent entrance and parking.

Brícia Du Mar also features two bars — Pool Bar, a seasonal poolside bar open only to guests serving everything from snacks to cocktails, and Terrace Du Bar, a rooftop bar serving wine and tapas and hosting live entertainment and sunset events.

A 300sqm gym, one of the largest hotel gyms in the Algarve

Last but not least, Spa Du Mar boasts a spa and 300sqm gym, described as one of the largest hotel gyms of its kind in the Algarve. It will be open to everyone and also feature a Turkish bath and three treatment rooms. All the above-mentioned facilities (except for the Pool Bar) are open to the general public.

Art lovers will also be able to marvel at a 2.25mx1.80m azulejo (tile) mural by Inna Iefimenko, which welcomes guests and pays tribute to Boto and his family and the village of Ferragudo.

Between the countryside and the sea

new Brícia du Mar Hotel in Ferragudo

The hotel’s strategic location between the countryside and the sea aims to show guests the best of these two different sides of the Algarve, while the proximity to popular beaches, the village of Ferragudo, and a wide range of amenities is expected to make the visitor’s experience even more pleasurable.

Brícia Du Mar is also located near the Bela Vista stadium and is already attracting interest from athletics and football teams from both Portugal and abroad.

Hopes are that it will become “the hotel of choice” for those who visit Lagoa for culture and sports events. In fact, the hotel is already reporting interest from visitors linked to the Grand Jeté International Dance Awards taking place in July in Lagoa.

  • Interview with Regional Director of Operations about the Future of Tourism

Interview with Regional Director of Operations about the Future of Tourism

Jorge Beldade director for the NH Group

As a kevy figure in tourism in the Algarve, Jorge Beldade talked about his career and the future of the industry

    – December 7, 2021

Jorge Beldade has held the position of regional operations director for the NH Group, acquired in 2016 by Minor Hotels, since 2006, leading the group’s seven Iberian Peninsula resorts, six in the Algarve and one in Marbella.

However, his journey began in 1973, when he finished his degree in Tourism at the Algarve Hotel and Tourism School in Faro. He started his career as a reception trainee at Hotel da Balaia, now Club Med da Balaia, one of the top luxury hotels at the time. “Those with top marks got to choose which hotel we wanted to train at, so that’s what I did. I chose [Balaia] because it was one of the best in the Algarve. You started at the bottom back then, but I began my career already thinking about what I wanted for myself,” Jorge Beldade recalls. Later, he was called upon to manage the Balaia apartments and to run the hotel’s commercial area.

In 2002, he became responsible for four hotels as regional director with the Tivoli chain: Tivoli Lagos Algarve Resort; Tivoli Marina Portimão Algarve Resort; Tivoli Marina Vilamoura Algarve Resort; and, of course, Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort, along with the flats in Vilamoura, The Residences at Victoria Algarve. With the opening of the Anantara Vilamoura Resort in 2008, four became five, and, in 2018, with the acquisition of the Group by Minor Hotels, which owns around 550 hotels around the world, Jorge Beldade also managed operations for the Anantara Villa Padierna Palace in Marbella.

Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort Junior Suite Premium Sea View Living Area

With a career spanning over 40 years in the tourism business, Jorge Beldade has experienced his fair share of social and economic crises over the years. The first was right after the 1974 Carnation Revolution: “We were suddenly left without clients and for a few years we had very low occupancy rates, with all the main markets blocked. It was a difficult situation.” Between 1990 and 1991, there was the Gulf War, which he describes as a “troubled period”, and between 2008 and 2014, the recession in Portugal. Despite these difficult periods, Beldade says that none can compare to the economic and social crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, right from the first quarter of 2020.

“This was the biggest challenge of my career. No other crisis was as this big or this difficult to manage. With all the others, we knew what to expect. But this was just constant blows,” he says. “Normally in a crisis, big companies always have other areas in the world where positive results offset the bad. But this was a worldwide shock, which is precisely why the challenge was so massive,” he explains.

In the hotels he manages, including Tivoli Carvoeiro, various strategies have been implemented. The first step was to contain and stop new investments. “We were doing just the essentials and the small necessary maintenances. We were forced to renegotiate contracts, but with very close communication with our approximately 1,500 workers, we managed to get through the most complicated period without losing any of the talent we had. I think part of our group’s success in Portugal was due to that”, adds Jorge Beldade.

Looking back on 2020, he points out that, for most of the time, the hotels were closed. In summer, the high season, average occupancy was around 50%, well below the more than 90% registered on the same period in 2019. As for 2021, hotels opened back up between April and May, and it was a period that the regional director describes of “amazing” occupancy rates.

Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort Sky Bar
Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort Sky Bar

“When the British came, and until June 10, we had fantastic occupancy rates. It was crazy. We went from 10 to 100% and we worked really well.” However, after June 10, when Portugal was excluded from the UK’s green flying list, “there was a big drop in UK tourists. The Portuguese and Spanish started coming, and in June, there was an occupancy rate of around 60%, 50%in July and 88% in August. It was a good month, and, in terms of numbers, this August was close to what we had in 2019,” he says.

As for the strategy used by the group for this past summer, the policy followed “was different from most of the units”, Beldade explains. And it proved to be the right move, since the growth in the average price is well above what they expected, which gives them a positioning advantage in the market for the post-crisis period. “We are moving into 2022 with a price level far above what we had in 2019, which was a very good year. This policy and this strategy give us a big advantage because our starting point for next year is well above most competing hotels and so our prospects for next year are good,” he states.

As an Algarve-native, Jorge Beldade argues that the region should be looked at as a whole rather than with “so much dispersal of authority. If this happened, the Algarve could be a paradise in Europe. There is still time to make it a super-luxury destination”. To achieve this, in his opinion, there needs to be more investment in the inland Algarve, improve access to beaches and create a cultural offer of excellence in the low season.

Inside looks at the increase of luxury and lifestyle accommodation on offer in the area

Hitting the top of the “Best place to retire in the world” list for the fourth year in a row and topping several travellers’ bucket lists, the Algarve is definitely in the spotlight at the moment. Those in the know have been enjoying the best this region has to offer, along with investors who are canny enough to be ahead of the game and strike gold. In the light of the new wave of tourism with a more discerning palette, Inside found a few fabulous boutique type B&B, lifestyle lodgings and renovated hotels to bring the quality up a notch or two.

Comfortable communal areas, including a terrace, make it a great place to sleep in the heart of Carvoeiro. The Decadente degustaria/concept store is on the bottom floor and is an absolute treat for wine lovers, where everything, including the tables and ashtrays, is available for sale. It does however close before 11pm, so as not to disturb the residents of The Grand.

THE LAGOA HOTEL AND THE CARVOEIRO HOTEL

These two properties were very badly neglected over the years but thanks to Glamour Futur Hotels, the old Lagoa Hotel and Aparthotel Solfeiras are now bright and comfortable, modern, well-equipped hotels that offer value for money accommodation and good onsite facilities including restaurants, conference and meeting rooms.

Both hotels have self-catering options in all units and communal swimming pools, with 44 rooms in Lagoa and 68 in Carvoeiro. The Lagoa hotel also has a great, little hairdressers tucked in the back.

These are just a few of the accommodation options on offer around Lagoa, but we feel that they are of a high-standard and represent a good price/quality comparison in the area while giving the guests a unique, knowledgeable, safe and comfortable base from where to enjoy their time here.

People play a huge role in a holiday experience and we believe that the guesthouses and hotels listed here feature great personal touches that make their guests feel appreciated. Those opening guesthouses and rental properties are generally people who have fallen in love with this part of the Algarve and want to share their experiences and local knowledge with their guests.

Liquid gold is probably the most important thing at Oktoberfest, but there’s much more to it than that.

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they live for Carnival, in Munich, Germany, for the Oktoberfest. When one is over, it’s time to look forward to the next. But what exactly is the Oktoberfest?

The Oktoberfest tradition started in 1810, to celebrate the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days in the fields in front of the city gates, since known as the Theresienwiese gardens, in honour of the Princess. The main event of the original Oktoberfest was a horse race. The event was so successful that they decided to hold the horse race the following year and then every year after that, before the celebration eventually evolved into the massive festival we know today, with 568,000 visitors in 2015. But if you live in the Algarve you don’t need to travel to Munich to enjoy the genuine Oktoberfest-feeling.

Since 2012, Vila Vita Biergarten, in Porches, has been holding its own annual Oktoberfest celebrations. This year they will be held between September 29 and October 5. The authentic Munich-style beer garden is located just off the EN 125, off the Porches roundabout, and features staff in Dirndls and Lederhosen, the traditional Bavarian costumes, as well as vivid murals portraying scenes from Bavarian life. Open all year, the restaurant will be particularly lively during Oktoberfest, with music every evening provided by the famous Münchner Gaudiblosn band, special menus with German delicacies throughout the week, and of course plenty of Erdinger beer, made by one of Germany’s most celebrated breweries.

Highlights on the menu prepared by executive chef Manfred Kickmaier include traditional Bavarian appetisers and sausages, authentic and delicious side dishes and the bestseller, crispy knuckle of pork (Schweinehaxe). The meat melts with every bite, while the crispy touch makes your mouth water. A dish to die for!

Start with a Brezel, the traditional German bread, in the shape of a loose knot, salted on the outside, together with Bavarian Obatzda, a cheese spread, the rich and exquisite flavour of which results from the perfect combination of three kinds of cheese. Try the Spätzle, one of the Biergarten’s specialities. This is made with dough, cooked in boiling water, before being sautéed with lots of onion, garlic and two types of cheese. Finally, it’s topped off with a crispy touch of pan-fried onions. When it comes to sausages, take your pick from Weißwurst, Currywurst, Thüringer, Nürnberger, Wiener or Merguez. Boasting an array of authentic flavours and a variety of herbs and spices, these sausages are prepared with the best organic pork and beef from Vila Vita Parc’s on-site butcher’s. The butcher’s works to the “Farm to Table” concept: the meat comes from Vila Vita Parc’s Herdade dos Grous estate, near Beja in the Alentejo and is prepared into delicious cold cuts and sausages at the on-site butcher’s. This way, Vila Vita Parc can control the quality of its meat from its origins, right up to the final product. The estate rears regional and local breeds, in the open, feeding them on the best pasture. This is reflected in the high-quality meat joined by side dishes such as potato salad, Sauerkraut, red cabbage, bread dumplings, sautéed potatoes or herb Spätzle, to make a perfect meal. You’ll be spoiled for choice! And of course, to end the meal in the best possible way, homemade Apple Strudel, served with whipped cream.

Ensuring the theme of the festival, Erdinger beer, in its Kristall, Weiß or Dunkel versions. The latter is even used at Vila Vita Parc Biergarten as an ingredient in its delicious freshly-baked bread, and to make ice cream and sauces.

Joining fine Bavarian beer, there is another, new drink, currently enjoying huge success at Vila Vita Parc, which will also be available at the Biergarten during the Oktoberfest – sangria made with beer and apple juice.

With its relaxed atmosphere and children’s play area in the gardens, the festival is a great treat for the whole family. During the Oktoberfest, the Vila Vita Biergarten will be open from 1pm to 10pm, with the band playing from 7pm onwards.
