Monchique City Council reveals its annual events calendar with innovative concepts

The new 2023 Programme focuses on preserving the council’s heritage, supporting local products and offering rural experiences

On May 27 and 28, “Vamos à vila” (Let’s go to town) will be the town’s first event. The initiative is a new concept, which will incorporate the famous Feira dos Enchidos (Sausage Fair), typically held in March.

The municipality has decided to switch up the fair’s format to keep things fresh and give it an updated look and feel. The new format focuses on the unique qualities of local products and on creating a more authentic experience in the rural setting.

Feira dos Enchidos, Monchique - Sausages Fair Monchique, Algarve
Feira dos Enchidos (Sausages Fair) Monchique, Algarve

“Vamos à vila” is also an opportunity for everyone to share their knowledge and the flavours of the hills, with Monchique’s heritage identity being the main highlight.

This ”Exhibition of flavours and knowledge – Traditional sausages and local products” is now the first major event on the annual calendar, followed by the ”Nights at the Mirante” in August, the ”Walking Festival” and the ”Monchique Christmas” in December.

For the city council, these events have ”the premise of highlighting what sets Monchique apart. They provide a varied offer, with local products, knowledge, particularities of the municipality, nature tourism, pedestrian routes and the landscape as the basis of this offer”.

With the municipality’s program there will be an ongoing cultural agenda that goes beyond just the significant dates, promoting other initiatives and providing a range of activities for everyone to enjoy, such as the featuring exhibitions that will take place at the Galeria de Santo António until the end of the year. This shows “the commitment to boost a cultural venue of excellence that was underused”.

The city council has also announced plans to focus on providing cultural opportunities to children and young people, who will be a priority in the new programme.

Lagoa to host first Sacred Music Festival

Cultural association Ideias do Levante and Lagoa Council have announced the first edition of the town’s Sacred Music Festival, to be held in October and November

In a statement to the press, the association says the goal is to “promote Lagoa’s religious artistic heritage, decentralise where concerts are held in the borough, introduce people to religious spaces, artists and instruments as well as to works by national and foreign composers.

“This event will not only bring together many projects based around religious music, which the association has been developing since 1995, but will also promote an exchange between institutions, researchers and historians, artists and musicians, and the public, which will allow us to offer an interesting dynamic around this event,” said Ideias do Levante president Roberto Estorninho.

Concerts will be held every Sunday at 5pm throughout October and November. The first performance will be streamed online on October 3, featuring Grace Borgan (transverse flute) who will perform at Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha in Porches.

The first concert to be open to the public is scheduled for October 10 and will see Jorge Félix (harpsichord) taking the stage at Lagoa’s Igreja da Misericórdia, while Salomé Matias (transverse flute) and Tiago Santos (clarinet) will perform together at Igreja de S. • Portimão cancels sardine festival but promises plenty of fun for all

Portimão cancels sardine festival but promises plenty of fun for all

For the second year straight, Portimão’s Sardine Festival will not be held due to the pandemic. However, the town will still pay homage to its favourite fish by organising five concerts with popular Portuguese artists between August 4 and 8 at the town’s riverside.

The town’s riverside is popular for its restaurants serving grilled sardines (Photo: INÊS LOPES/OPEN MEDIA GROUP)

“As the pandemic still doesn’t allow the full return of the Sardine Festival, Portimão Council is organising these concerts for the whole family, where all sanitary measures will be followed,” the local authority says in a communiqué to the press.

The ‘Sardinhas em Concerto’ programme will see five well-known Portuguese bands and singers take to the stage, starting with Resistência on August 4, followed by Toy (August 5), João Pedro Pais (6), Gisela João (August 7) and Miguel Araújo (August 8).

Doors will open at 8pm with concerts starting at 9pm. The outdoor venue will be fenced off and include designated seats. Eating and drinking will not be allowed due to current recommendations from the board of cultural activities (IGAC) and the national health board (DGS).

Tickets have a “symbolic price” of €1 and can be purchased from Friday (July 30) at the TEMPO theatre, Portimão Museum or online at www.bol.pt. Attendees must be aged 6+.

Portimão’s Sardine Festival is one of the Algarve’s largest summer events, attracting thousands of locals and visitors every summer. In 2019, the event is said to have attracted a record 100,000 people. The event shines the spotlight on sardines, the town’s “jewel of the sea”.

Local restaurants take part and serve sardines the ‘typical’ way – grilled, with salad and potatoes, or on a slice of bread.

Says the council, these concerts aim to keep the town and its population connected to the sardine tradition while boosting local business, particularly restaurants.

There will be entertainment every night, with four concerts planned for the four opening days: Al-Folk and Arakisati (July 30); Arabian (July 31); Alhambra and Emad Selim (August 1) and Albaluna (August 2). Tickets cost €3 per person.
