Lagos and Lagoa welcome Shadow Puppet rendition of “The Epic of Gilgamesh”, one of the oldest written stories on the planet

A shadow puppetry rendition of ‘Epic of Gilgamesh’, one of the oldest written stories on the planet, will take place in Lagos (February 18-19) at the local cultural centre’s auditorium and in Lagoa (February 20-21) at the Carlos do Carmo auditorium, starting at 4pm.

The show is being brought to life by Questão Repetida and Artis XXI and will use the art of shadow play to bring the story to life.

Say organisers, “the show will follow the misadventures of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian hero who could defeat any enemy in battle and even lift mountains.

“Legend has it that Gilgamesh was part god, part human. When Gilgamesh, due to his loneliness, starts to mistreat the Uruk people, the gods decide to intervene by sending him a challenge: Enkidu, the wild man. Enkidu and Gilgamesh fight, but as neither of them can defeat the other, something surprising happens. And this is where the adventures begin,” they add.

The show is described as an “original idea” by Ana Falé who is also the artistic director and narrator, while Elsa Santos Mathei oversees the music direction. The puppeteer is Jorge Soares and the music will be performed live by Ensemble Armilar. Algarve composer João Pacheco also helped with the writing of the musical pieces.

Tickets cost €6 and can be purchased at www.ticketline.sapo.pt. Admission is free for under-18. The first show in Lagos (February 18) and last show in Lagoa (February 21) will be open exclusively to schools.

Vila Vita Parc will celebrate it’s 30th anniversary with 30 weeks and 30 events, from gastronomy to art and wellness

Vila Vita Parc Resort in Porches will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year throughout “30 weeks filled with 30 exceptional events” spanning the worlds of art, culture, gastronomy, wellness and lifestyle.

According to the resort, this anniversary represents an “important milestone for the brand” following 30 years of “precious moments, memories and experiences in the art of hospitality.”

“Since 1992, when VILA VITA first opened its doors, the resort has blossomed into a world leading destination that is now a magnet for globetrotters and gourmet lovers from around the world; travellers who are looking for exceptional, authentic cuisine, vibrant interiors, local community experiences to really explore the region, and to simply enjoy Portuguese hospitality at its most welcoming,” says the five-star resort.

The 30th anniversary festivities will take place between April and November and will celebrate the hotel’s “continuing innovation and creative vision, qualities that have seen VILA VITA Parc transform over the past three decades into a highly respected, leading voice on the global luxury travel stage.”

Foodies will have a lot to look forward to, as Vila Vita is planning a series of themed fine-dining dinners and events called ‘Reach for the Stars’, which will bring together a “unique constellation” of Michelin stars and renowned chefs from Portugal and all over the world.

There will be three editions of the event – Portugal, World and Asia

The Portuguese edition will feature leading Portuguese chefs with two Michelin stars who will be “cooking up a storm” at Ocean Restaurant with chef Hans Neuner.

The World edition promises to delight “discerning gourmands” as 10 renowned chefs from around the world with three Michelin stars will team up with top wine producers at Vila Vita Parc’s Clubhouse for a “memorable evening of sumptuous cuisine, an eclectic ambiance and world-class wines.”

For Asian food lovers, the Asia edition will see four international chefs specialising in Asian cuisine taking over the kitchen at the resort’s Mizu Teppanyaki restaurant on four different dates.

But these will not be the only gastronomic events taking place. ‘La Bela France’ will bring three renowned French chefs to the resort to create a “fabulous feast” at the Bela Vista restaurant on three different evenings.

Lastly, some of the Algarve’s best chefs will be “combining their culinary repertoire into a series of delightful dishes for dinner” at Adega. ‘Passionate About Algarve’ will also bring reputed wine producers from the region together with the chefs alongside live entertainment.

V Club

It’s not all about food though. The resort is also planning to launch the Vila Vita Social Club, a series of events focusing on “bars and mixology” taking place over the course of the 30 weeks. V Club, the hotel’s new nightclub, is also due to launch on July 7, and the start of summer will be celebrated with a ‘Summer Pink Pool Party’ where “everything will be pink head to toe, including the pool water, drinks and décor”.

Another highlight promises to be the ‘Art in the Parc’ initiative – a series of events taking place in the hotel’s gardens featuring concerts (Fado, Classical and Jazz), art exhibitions and local arts and crafts displays.

As Vila Vita Parc is also known for being a “leading spa and wellness resort”, it will also host a number of “visiting practitioners, motivational guest speakers, and a tennis academy with former world-famous players.”

Singer Sofia Escobar will perform this Saturday in Lagoa with the Algarve Wind Orchestra

The Algarve Wind Orchestra and Singer Sofia Escobar will perform in Lagoa’s Auditorium this Saturday at 7pm

Sofia Escobar – a Portuguese actress and singer who has become a starring member of West End musicals in London – will perform alongside the Algarve Wind Orchestra (Orquestra de Sopros do Algarve) at Lagoa’s Carlos do Carmo auditorium on Saturday, February 5 at 7pm.

The orchestra will be led by maestro João Rocha and will interpret Jorge Salgueiro’s second Symphony ‘Mare Nostrum’.

The symphony is inspired by the Portuguese Discoveries and follows the “Portuguese symphonic tradition that started with the symphonies of Luís de Freitas Branco and continued with Joly Braga Santos which features a narrative with four tempos: Vocatorius, Sirenis, De Profundis, and Adventus.”

Tickets cost €10 and can be purchased online at www.ticketline.sapo.pt or at Fnac, Worten and the ticket offices at the auditorium and Lagoa’s Balcão Único. A 20% discount is available for holders of Lagoa’s cultural passport, social card and the Rota do Petisco 2021 passport.

6th Algarve International Piano Festival starts on January 29 in Portimão

Portimão’s TEMPO Theatre will once again host the Algarve International Piano Festival, this time with live audience

After an “online edition in 2021”, the Algarve International Piano Festival is returning to Portimão’s TEMPO theatre for a series of live concertos.

The sixth edition will begin on Saturday (January 29) at 7pm with a performance by H4nds Duo, featuring pianists António Luís Silva and Tiago Nunes, who will be playing pieces by several renowned composers including Schubert, Dvořák, Gluck, Piazzola and Zequinha de Abreu.

“The geographic diversity of the composers selected” aims to take listeners on a journey and pay homage to the resilience of everyone who was prevented from travelling in recent years due to the pandemic.

The second concerto will take place on Sunday, February 5, featuring Kosovo-born pianist Mrika Sefa, an award-winning musician who frequently works together with artists from all over Europe including Portuguese maestro Martim Sousa Tavares from the Orquestra Sem Fronteiras (Orchestra Without Borders).

South-Korean pianista Youngho Park will make his debut at the festival on Sunday, March 5, for a solo performance. Park has performed all over the world, having won several awards and contests, and performed with prestigious orchestras such as the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the Gunpo Philharmonic Orchestra and Seoul National University Philharmonic Orchestra.

The string of shows will continue Sunday, April 9 when Argentine pianist Pablo Lapidusas will take the main stage at TEMPO. Lapidusas began his piano studies in Brazil, where he went on to perform alongside a multitude of musicians, from the Canadian Orchestra I Musici de Montréal to the band of Brazilian rapper Marcelo D2. He has already recorded two albums and performed live in 20 countries, taking the stage at massive festivals such as Rock in Rio, Montreux Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl, Summer Stage (held at New York’s Central Park), Lollapalooza, Roskilde, Nice Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz Festival and Back to Black.

Two final concertos are planned for May, with the Algarve Symphonic Orchestra (which took to the stage for the first time in October) due to perform on May 6 with maestro Armando Mota conducting. Performing with the orchestra will be Leonardo Hilsdorf, described as one of the best up-and-coming Brazilian pianists. Hilsdorf was a young soloist-in-residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium for two years under the direction of his current mentor, Maria João Pires.

Last but not least, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra will perform on Friday, May 20, led by maestro Adrian Leaper and accompanied by soloist João Rosado.

The February 5, March 5 and March 9 performances will begin at 7pm, whilst the May 6 and May 20 concertos are scheduled for 9pm.

“Elas e o Jazz” singing trio will bring New York style Jazz to Lagoa this Saturday, 29th

The talented singing trio of Joana Machado, Marta Hugon and Mariana Norton will be bringing their ‘Elas e o Jazz’ show to Lagoa’s Carlos do Carmo auditorium on Saturday (January 29) at 9.30pm.

The three singers met at Hot Clube de Portugal – a jazz school in Lisbon – when they were students. They eventually became teachers together at the same school, each pursuing their own musical endeavours and collaborating with each other occasionally before joining forces to perform tunes by some of their favourite jazz artists, such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Richard Rogers, Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen.

The trio will be accompanied in Lagoa by pianist João Pedro Coelho, contrabass player Bernardo Moreira and drummer André Sousa Machado, who will help “recreate the always contemporary universe of Broadway musicals and New York jazz clubs”.

Chef Hans Neuner to host live cooking event at Estoril Open Tournament

Algarve chef Hans Neuner receives ‘wildcard’ to cook at Estoril Open tennis tournament

Chef Hans Neuner from the two-Michelin star restaurant Ocean at Vila Vita Parc Resort in Porches has been invited to host a live night-time cooking event on April 29 for the guests of the Millennium Estoril Open tennis tournament in Cascais.

Using the kitchen at Slice Restaurant, the chef will be serving dishes inspired by Cascais and its “excellent products, telling a story about the region through his brilliance”.

Neuner has lived in the Algarve for more than 13 years, having become one of the region’s most famous and successful chefs. He has been a two-Michelin star holder since 2011 at Ocean and also placed 50th in the 2021 edition of The Best Chef Awards.

He will now be showcasing his talents at Millennium Estoril Open, the only ATP World Tour tennis tournament to take place in Portugal.

“The combination of the art of gastronomy and sports – two distinct worlds which deep down share the same ambition of being at the top – could only result in a unique and inspiring experience for all visitors,” said Vila Vita Parc general manager Kurt Gillig.

“It is with genuine pleasure that we team up with Millennium Estoril Open, which, like us, has the will to create a positive impact in our country, which is immediately reflected on an international level,” Gillig added.

Meanwhile, Estoril Open tournament director João Stilwell Zilhão said that the partnership with Hans Neuner and Ocean is “further proof that Millennium Estoril Open aims to be much more than a tennis event.

“We are proud to provide our sponsors and partners with truly unique experiences, not only in terms of tennis, and I’m certain that the night starring Hans Neuner will be memorable,” said Zilhão.

This will be the seventh edition of the Millennium Estoril Open in Cascais. Last year, the tournament took place behind closed doors due to the pandemic, but tennis fans will be returning to the stands this year.

The ATP tournament receives great media attention, having been the subject of 38 hours of television broadcast in Portugal and over 2,360 hours internationally. The global sponsorship is evaluated at around €360 million.
