Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel wins Volta ao Algarve 2022

    – February 21, 2022

Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) won his second Volta ao Algarve last weekend, repeating his 2020 victory and cementing his name in the competition’s history as one of the few cyclists to win it twice.

Despite finishing 5th in the last stage on Sunday, his dominant performance in Saturday’s time trial gave him the lead he needed to be crowned the overall winner.

“I wanted to come back and do the same thing I did two years ago and I’m glad I did. I knew that this week the time trial was the most important thing. Yesterday (Saturday) I gave everything, and today (Sunday) I still felt (the effort) in my legs. But as we approached the last climb, Louis (Vervaeke) and other teammates did a great job,” said Evenepoel.

Colombian Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the final stage – a 173km ride from Lagoa to Malhão in Loulé – after having competed for the win in the second stage, only to crash with the finish line in sight. This time everything went well for the South American cyclist.

“First of all, I want to dedicate this victory to the great-grandmother of my girlfriend, who died the day I fell. To have the possibility of winning the stage, falling, arriving at the hotel and receiving this bad news… It’s a big blow. Today (Sunday) we left for the stage motivated to give our best and we got this victory. The team had difficult days in the Algarve. One of us fell and broke his collarbone, another got sick, but today we won,” said Higuita.

    Here’s the top-10 overall standings:
    1. Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team – Belgium): 19:35:03
    2. Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates – UAE): + 1:17
    3. Daniel Martinez (INEOS Grenadiers – UK): +1:21
    4. Ethan Hayter (INEOS Grenadiers): +1:39
    5. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ – France): +2:00
    6. Tobias S. Foss (Jumbo-Visma – Netherlands): +2:04
    7. Stefan Kung (Groupama-FDJ): +2:16
    8. Thibaut Guernalec (Team Arkea-Samsic – France): +2:41
    9. Sven Erik Bystrom (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux – Belgium): +3:13
    10. Dylan Van Baarle (INEOS Grenadiers): +3:38

Last year, the Volta ao Algarve was won by the region’s very own João Rodrigues.

Marc Thivierge, a Canadian artist, features his abstract paintings at EMARP, Portimão

    – February 14, 2022

High Tide, Low Tide” is a new visual arts exhibition opening on February 14 at the EMARP reception hall in Portimão.

It will be the first time that Canadian visual artist Marc Thivierge will be participating in such an exhibition.

The location is unique because the place serves not only as a service provider for the public, but it is also an ideal space for exhibiting artwork.

Marc Thivierge has been invited to participate in this monthly presentation because of his unique approach to painting.

The exhibition represents the back-and-forth movements of the sea. The impressions and the meditative mood felt by the sea on this abstract artist are on the canvases presented.
Every piece is like a cut in the action of the waves’ relentless movement, sometimes calm, sometimes tumultuous.

Marc Thivierge was born in the 50s in Ottawa, Canada, in a family that loved art. He is retired and spends a good part of the year in the Algarve. “The luminosity here, the colours all around us, the scents and sounds are all elements that make us come back. But it is the people of Portugal that really make the grade with us,” said the artist.

The exhibition runs until March 18 and is open on weekdays from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Portimão EMARP is located at Rua José António Marques, 17.

New beach boardwalk in praia da rocha portimão

The beach boardwalk in Praia da Rocha is undergoing a complete replacement and will feature 50 new light posts and free public Wifi

    – February 11, 2022

Portimão Council has revealed that the replacement of Praia da Rocha’s beach boardwalk is moving along at a “good pace”.

Costing over €1 million, the project involves the complete replacement of the entire boardwalk, which was built around 16 years ago and was growing increasingly rundown. Some sections were even missing wooden boards and posing risks to those using it.

The Praia da Rocha boardwalk is also being equipped with LED lighting, making it “safer and more pleasant” for a nighttime stroll as well as for clients of restaurants located along the boardwalk. Says the council, a total of 50 light posts (measuring five metres) are being set up along the boardwalk.

New and “more resilientwooden boards – which are expected to be more resistant to the elements of the area, located just a few hundred metres away from the sea – are being used to build the new boardwalk in Praia da Rocha beach in Portimão.

The project also includes the installation of a public Wi-Fi network which will provide free internet access to anyone in the area.

“Since it was inaugurated in 2006, the Praia da Rocha boardwalk has been used a lot by residents and tourists for their leisurely walks or to reach the several restaurants along its path. It is also used frequently during the night, especially in spring and summer,” the local council says.

A deadline for the works has not been revealed by the local council, although the boardwalk will likely be ready by springtime.

A Sports Car Team of disabled drivers to test new McLaren at Algarve racetrack

    Team Brit

Team Brit, a competitive motor racing team consisting of disabled drivers, is travelling to the Algarve for a winter testing event for its new McLaren 570S GT4 race car for the British GT Championship

    – February 10, 2022

The team will be in the Algarve for a week, but the tests will be held at the Algarve International Racetrack in Portimão between Thursday, February 10 and Saturday, February 12.

The car will be driven by Aaron Morgan and Bobby Trundley in the British GT Championship this year.

“Successfully completing the championship puts our team just one step away from being eligible to apply for 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is our goal to become the first ever all-disabled team to race in the iconic event,” the team says.

Aaron Morgan is a paraplegic who broke his back in a motocross accident when he was 15. He uses the team’s “world-leading hand controls which enable him to compete against able-bodied drivers”.

Bobby Trundley was diagnosed with severe autism at the age of four and has “excelled in racing since the age of 10 when he discovered that karting had a hugely positive impact on the way he manages the conditions”.

He now calls his autism his “superpower” and is the highest-ranked autistic racing driver in the world.

Bobby and Aaron will be the only two drivers at testing, supported by Team Brit’s crew under the leadership of Engineering Director Al Locke.

“Preparation is key to a successful championship campaign, so we test as much as possible before the start of the season to get the driver and crew up to speed with the handling and setup of the car,” Al Locke told the Resident.

Portimão is the perfect place to replicate weather conditions for April’s British GT Championship race

“Ideally, we’d be testing on the tracks we’ll be racing at, in the weather conditions in which we’ll be racing. In the UK, this is not possible in the lead up to the start of the season due to the weather. Portimão in February is a good likeness to the inclement weather in the UK around the start of the season in April, so it provides us with a good opportunity to replicate the track temperature, air temperature, humidity, etc. that we’ll experience when we get to the first race event,” he added.

Locke also had many good things to say about the region’s international racetrack, which he described as a “phenomenal complex”.

“It’s a modern, fast circuit with excellent pit facilities. The circuit is easily accessible from Faro airport, and is close to the sea and the city attractions of Portimão, so it works well for accommodation and hospitality too.”

Visit www.teambrit.co.uk to learn more about the team and how it aims to inspire people with disabilities, PTSD and mental health issues, by demonstrating what can be achieved through motorsport.
