German artist and businessman Karl Heinz Stock unveils impressive sculture with the help of 11 local artists

German artist and businessman Karl Heinz Stock has unveiled an impressive and imposing sculpture created with the help of 11 local artists at the Nobel International School roundabout in Lagoa.

Entitled ‘Multifaceted Globes’, the sculpture features 15 painted globes, all interconnected by a complex metallic structure.

Karl Heinz Stock, known locally as the owner of the Quinta dos Vales wine and art estate in Estômbar, says the sculpture is a representation of the “diversity of the planet, nature and its people”.

The sculpture was designed and created by Stock, whilst the globes were painted by 11 local artists, each providing their own “interpretation and vision of the world”.

“Everyone sees the world differently, and none of us are right or wrong. By presenting such a diversified group of interpretations side by side, the project became more inclusive, and thus came closer to the reality of our world,” says Stock.

Among the artists invited to collaborate in the creation of the artwork was Franco Charais, a revolutionary who fought against Portugal’s ‘Estado Novo’ regime and later on became a member of Portugal’s Revolution Council, being hailed as “one of the founders of democracy” in the country.

The other 10 talented artists who also contributed were Toin Adams, Henryka Woerle, Stella Barreto, Elke Heiner, Jessica Dunn, Sofia Barreto, Jill Stott, Meinke Flesseman, Kasia Wrona and Vitalij Manich.

The sculpture has been strongly praised by local mayor Luís Encarnação, who said it is an accurate representation of the municipality.

“It would be hard to find an artistic project more in line with the representation of Lagoa and its role in the country and in the world – a cosmopolitan municipality, which is proud of being welcoming and where we believe that, with this beautiful artwork by Karl Heinz Stock, humanity’s progress is achieved through the exchange of many peoples and culture, without leaving anyone behind,” the mayor said.

Its placement at the roundabout near Nobel International School, attended by students of more than 50 nationalities from different continents, was also strategic, as it represent Lagoa’s diverse and cosmopolitan nature, the local council said in a statement to the press.

The local authority also said that the sculpture is part of the renovation project carried at the roundabout. “Besides creating an attraction in a central area in the borough, the renovation of public spaces through high-quality urban art is in line with our process of humanising the municipality’s urban environment and building more people-friendly public spaces,” the council added.

Algarve Physiotherapist creates Programme to encourage “Movement Beyond Fifty”

Created by Algarve Physiotherapist Joel Fernandes, the ‘Movement Beyond Fifty’ programme aims to help people maintain mobility as they get older

    – April 10, 2023

Algarve Physiotherapist Joel Fernandes creates Programme to encourage “Movement Beyond Fifty” - 2

Simple movements like sitting down or getting up are often taken for granted. But as we get older, we start to lose our ability to perform them.

Portimão physiotherapist Joel Fernandes realised this when his grandmother fell one night in 2012 and was unable to get up until his mother found her on the floor the next day.

Surprised that she was unable to get up on her own, Joel decided to dive deeper into his studies and found out that many people “of a certain age” also struggle with this ‘basic movement’ – getting up.

Algarve Physiotherapist Joel Fernandes creates Programme to encourage “Movement Beyond Fifty”

After years of research, courses, training and trial-anderror, the 42-year-old physiotherapist created his own unique programme, which he calls Movement Beyond Fifty (MBF).

By training people to complete basic human movements such as squatting, lunging, pushing, turning and reaching, Joel hopes to not only “improve their movement health in order to live a more fulfilling life” but also prepare them to deal with situations like that which affected his grandmother, should they occur.

“These are basic human movements, and we all need the basics, from top athletes such as Cristiano Ronaldo to those whose only physical activity is taking the dog for a walk,” says Joel, who has worked twice as the physiotherapist for local club Portimonense and now runs his own private practice at Vila Rosa in Praia da Rocha.

“If someone struggles to squat, they will likely struggle to sit on a chair or toilet, get in and out of a car, or pick up objects that have dropped on the floor,” he adds. While MBF was created with older people in mind, Joel says that anyone can benefit from these exercises and working on their mobility, stability, coordination, balance, cardio and strength.

The programme draws inspiration from several methodologies and findings from different studies, which clearly show that maintaining the ability to stand up and lie down on the floor, independently, is important for us to age in a healthy and active way.

And that is why the MBF exercises are performed on the floor. “Some people find it strange to sit or lie on the floor because, as adults, we lose our familiarity with it – we grow further away from the floor as we get older. If you look at children, they are always playing on the floor. Adults have lost that connection, and that is when our physical decline begins,” he explains.

The MBF programme was initially designed with the Algarve’s expat community in mind, as Joel believed that foreign residents would be more open about these “out-of-the-box” exercises. But as the word started to spread, Joel has been welcoming more and more Portuguese clients, with his clientele now divided almost equally between foreigners and Portuguese.

Joel has created a website where people can learn more about MBF, see some of his clients’ testimonies and become a subscriber, with access to the private MBF Facebook Group, where MBF classes and tutorials are posted. Tutorials are posted on Sunday while a new class is posted every Monday. All information and videos are posted in English.

Nature Photographer Craig Rogers reveals some of his favourite spots in the Algarve where you can practice your wildlife photography skills

    – April 10, 2023

Discover some great wildlife photography spots in the Algarve with Photographer Craig Rogers - 4

I am often asked where the best locations to view and photograph wildlife in the Algarve are, and my reply is often “Anywhere!”.

Whilst some of my photography takes advanced planning, camouflage and patience, some of my favourite photographs are simply from being at the right place at the right time.

Three locations in the Algarve offer opportunities to view and photograph the great wildlife to be found here.

What makes these three locations great is that there are opportunities to change the angle of view to create artistic photography.

All three offer large open space to walk, however, always remember to stop, sit and simply wait, you’ll be surprised how close some of the wildlife will approach you, including the amazing Greater Flamingos.

Species can vary throughout the year due to migrations, but there is always opportunity to view many different species of wildlife, including the usually elusive Otter.

“A Rocha Delicada” – Alvor Estuary

The Alvor Estuary is a great location for a walk along the boardwalk between the protected estuary and the grand beach of Alvor, however, situated to the northwest of the Alvor Estuary is a wetland area, generally, very quiet with a great circular walk around the breakwaters.

Access to this small paradise, complete with a small beach that grows as the tide retreats, is via the N125 at the Mexilhoeria Grande roundabout.

The access road is unsurfaced and can be very muddy if approached after rain.

The walking route around the wetland is flat, however, the surface is a little rough in places. This is the perfect getaway for a picnic on the beach one side of the breakwater and an opportunity to view wildlife on the other side.

    Lagoa dos Salgados

Nestled between Armação de Pêra and Galé is a beautiful oasis offering a huge selection of wildlife both in and out of the water.

Otters are a frequent sight here and also the area is home to many Little Owls.

There is nothing better than watching the hundreds of Glossy Ibis leaving to roost at sunset. Access directly to the Lagoa is possible by using the car park for Praia Grande de Pêra which is also a fantastic beach, however, it is also possible to access via a boardwalk from the car park for Praia dos Salgados.

    Ludo

Quite possibly my favourite wetland location, Ludo has a combination of active and disused salt flats making it the perfect location for wildlife.

The area is huge and if you’re feeling energetic it’s possible to walk to the amazing lake at the São Lourenço Golf Course which has an incredible amount of birdlife.

The Ludo area itself offers fantastic views of wading birds. There are many ways to access the area, the easiest is to enter right at the west end of the runway of Faro Airport, by following the signs to Praia do Faro which of course includes a section of the Ria Formosa.

  • Portimão’s Historic Centre welcomes New Art Gallery by Algarve Artist Meinke Flesseman

Portimão’s Historic Centre welcomes New Art Gallery by Algarve Artist Meinke Flesseman

Dutch-Born Algarve Artist Meinke Flesseman has started a new project in an old building which is being completely renovated

    – April 10, 2023

New Art Gallery by Algarve Artist Meinke Flesseman 2

The idea to purchase the building and open her own gallery came to Meinke from the desire to create her own artistic space. “I fell in love with this place,” Meinke said. “It was big, and spooky, and had all the space that I wanted. My imagination ran wild.”

The gallery opened in December last, but the two-storey building is being renovated to act as “five spaces in one, which are still connected but nonetheless separable”. The gallery occupies just one of the building’s spaces.

Whilst the artist initially planned to take over the building with two other people, she eventually decided to move forward on her own. Renovation work began in October 2021 and has proven to be quite the endeavour.

New Art Gallery by Algarve Artist Meinke Flesseman 5

“It has everything one could wish for, it’s true, but it’s also a lot of spare metres to fix up, and that was the naïve part. But it’s going well, and it’s exciting,” said Meinke, likening the construction process to painting.

It’s all about building something up, and then using your imagination, changing it…,” she explained.

Right next door to Meinke’s gallery is the Sphinx Gallery, which is located in a building previously owned by Meinke.

It is wonderful because we complement each other. I think this is already generating some out-of-the-box energy in Portimão, which has not really been seen as a place to come to see art,” the artist said.

New Art Gallery by Algarve Artist Meinke Flesseman 4

“The same happened in Olhão. Fifteen years ago, people would ask why anyone would want to live in Olhão. And now many people want to live there. Artists attract other artists and help create reasons for other people to come there and invest,” said Meinke, adding that Portimão has the potential to continue to grow as an attractive destination for artists as well as investors.

“Portimão has a lot of qualities. It is still one of the most affordable towns in the Algarve to live in, and it offers a lot of quality, being so close to the sea and boasting such easy access. There are also a lot of beautiful buildings just waiting to be renovated,” she added.

New Art Gallery by Algarve Artist Meinke Flesseman 1

The opening of the gallery is the culmination of an art-filled life for Meinke, who was born in Amsterdam but grew up in the Algarve “surrounded by animals, nature and simplicity”.

These sources of inspiration are evident in a lot of her work, as animals (particularly goats), are often represented in her paintings.

“They bring me good memories and good feelings, so they are a recurring element in my work. It perhaps represents a longing for simplicity and well-being, which I associate them with. They all look similar, but they have their own personalities, cheekiness, independence and ways of being,” she said.

Meinke describes herself as an artist who is particularly drawn to nature and a sense of purity. “Hence the greenery, farm animals, beach scenes and the general simplicity of everyday life that I’m able to observe,” she says.

Whilst Meinke always had a knack for using her hands to create things and express herself creatively, she only started studying art in her late 20s. “I lived in different countries and under different circumstances, but it ended up being a good thing because I only studied art later when I really knew for sure what I wanted to do with my life,” the 56-year-old artist said.

After growing up in the Algarve, Meinke moved back to the Netherlands before travelling to Italy to study jewellery-making. Several years later, she enrolled in Fine Arts School – in Moscow – with the Volkovs, and continued her Art studies, graduating from Ruud Wacker’s Academy, in Amsterdam. She moved back to Portugal with her daughter and then-husband around 25 years ago, having spent time living in Lagoa, Olhão and now Portimão.

Meinke Flesseman Gallery’ is located at number 126 on Rua Infante Dom Henrique – the long street which connects the old bridge between Portimão and Lagoa to the Gil Eanes square. All works currently exhibited at the gallery were created by Meinke, with almost all being available for sale.

Although it’s still early days, with other parts of the building still under renovation, Meinke is planning to also host exhibitions by other artists or collectives of artists. For now, the gallery is open only by appointment, although the plan is to eventually have the doors open to the public.

Carvoeiro’s Iconic Restaurant ‘Bon Bon’ Celebrated its 10th Anniversary in Style

The Michelin-starred restaurant celebrated its 10th anniversary with two unforgettable gastronomic evenings

Ten of Portugal’s best chefs came together for a truly unforgettable set of dinners in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Carvoeiro’s Michelin-star restaurant Bon Bon.

Bon Bon chef José Lopes teamed up with a different team of prestigious chefs on each night.

Each chef presented one dish, with José Lopes also being in charge of dessert.

The first night featured Luís Brito from A Ver Tavira (one Michelin star); Gil Fernandes from Fortaleza do Guincho (one star) in Cascais; Diogo Pereira from Cascade Wellness & Lifestyle Resort in Lagos; and Óscar Geadas from G Pousada in Bragança (and a former host of Masterchef Portugal).

A mouth-watering and sumptuous menu was prepared for the opening dinner, with guests being served cuttlefish with fava beans and mint by chef Luís Brito, whilst Óscar Geadas left his mark on the evening with ‘Azedo de Vinhais’ (a typical smoked sausage from the north of Portugal) with lobster and rapini.

Diogo Pereira’s version of a ‘surf and turf’ included turbot and piglet with cilantro, whilst the star of Gil Fernandes’ dish was lamprey eel served with presunto and bread.

Resident chef José Lopes was not left out of the fun, having served beef tongue and truffle for his main dish and bebinca (an Indo-Portuguese layer cake) with yoghurt and spices for dessert.

Meanwhile, the line-up for the second night consisted of João Marreiros from Loki in Portimão; Leonel Pereira from Check-in Faro; Pedro Lemos from his self-titled restaurant (one star) in Porto; Alípio Branco from Casa Velha in Quinta do Lago; and David Jesus, formerly the resident chef at Belcanto (two stars) in Lisbon.

Guests were treated to a truly gourmet experience on the second evening. Leonel Pereira wowed gourmands with his version of mackerel and carabineiro shrimp cooked in magnesium, sea celery and blue micro algae.

Eel, cabbage and dashi was the winning combination presented by Pedro Lemos, whilst David Jesus served crayfish with cabeça de xara (a type of Portuguese terrine) and ervilha lágrima (a special type of peas) on a slice of toasted activated charcoal with crayfish stock.

João Marreiros’ contribution was forkbeard, veal pancetta and wild chard, Alípio Branco served bass with algae xerém (a type of corn porridge) with cockle sauce and ‘sand’ curry, and José Lopes unveiled a dish of wild boar, truffle and red wine before ending the experience with an Algarve orange torta (Swiss roll).

Bon Bon owner Nuno Diogo was delighted with the ’10 Years, 10 Chefs’ event, held in February, describing it as a huge success.

“Everyone left here very happy. I am delighted with the outcome,” he said, promising to continue bringing the country’s top chefs to Bon Bon for similar events. “I’ve been inviting guests to come cook here for 10 years, and we have more events with guest chefs planned for later this year,” Nuno Diogo added. So, watch this space!
